Beyond Canton: choosing the right specialised trade fair in China for your sector

01

General fair or specialised fair? The difference in depth and focus

The Canton Fair offers a very wide range, but for companies that want to go deep in one sector, specialised fairs are often more productive. Every year China hosts large-scale sector fairs in areas such as machinery, electronics, packaging, furniture, textile fabrics, automotive parts, food, cosmetics, lighting and medical products. Most exhibitors at these fairs are manufacturers specialised in their field; technical teams are at the stand, new products are often shown here first, and you can quickly understand the price level within the sector.

When choosing a fair, you need to look not only at its name but also at its city and exhibitor profile. For example, electronics and hardware fairs cluster around Shenzhen, furniture and home textile fairs in Shanghai and Guangzhou, and small household goods and gifts in Yiwu. Yeni İpekyolu listens to your sector, the product level you want and your target market, and presents two or three candidate fairs. For each candidate we review together the dates, city, exhibitor type and the production areas that can be added to the same trip.

The Chinese fair calendar: holidays, seasons and good timing

In China, the fair calendar follows the rhythm of business life. In the weeks before and after Chinese New Year (Spring Festival), factories close or slow down and fewer fairs are held. The Golden Week holiday at the start of October also affects travel and hotel prices. Busy fair seasons are usually spring and autumn; several sector fairs may run in different cities in the same weeks. Since organisers can change dates, we confirm the current calendar together before finalising the plan.

Good timing lets you reach several goals in one trip. For example, you can combine a fair in Shanghai with factory visits in Zhejiang or Jiangsu, or an electronics fair in Shenzhen with manufacturers in Dongguan. Our team builds the flight, train and hotel plan accordingly. Thanks to China's high-speed rail network, travelling between cities is usually easy; tickets are bought with a passport and you need to be at the departure station early. Our team organises station transfers and ticketing for you.

03

Technical meetings at a specialised fair and the post-fair review

At specialised fairs, meetings are more technical: materials, tolerances, capacity, certificates and custom production (OEM or ODM) options are discussed. That is why an interpreter who knows the sector's terminology makes a big difference. Before the fair, we prepare your technical drawings, standards and questions in Chinese so that you can ask them systematically at the stands. We also contact exhibitors in advance via WeChat to book appointments with an engineer or sales manager. Scheduled meetings are the most reliable way to reach the right person on crowded fair days.

When the fair ends, you have dozens of catalogues and WeChat contacts. Yeni İpekyolu turns this information into a report ranked by technical fit, price, MOQ and communication quality. For shortlisted firms we plan company checks, sample requests and, if needed, a factory audit. The fair thus becomes the starting point for building a long-term supplier network in your sector. The report also includes a short summary of price and product trends observed at the fair. If you wish, we add our recommendation on which fair should be the priority next season.

06 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Chinese fair suits my sector?

After hearing about your product and goals, we present two or three candidate fairs. For each, we compare the city, dates, exhibitor profile and nearby production areas.

What is the difference between a specialised fair and the Canton Fair?

The Canton Fair brings many categories together, while specialised fairs offer more expert manufacturers and more technical meetings in one sector. Some companies use both in different seasons.

What if the fair dates change?

Organisers occasionally change dates or venues. We follow the announcements and update your travel plan quickly if there is a change; we confirm the current calendar together before finalising.

Is visitor registration paid?

It varies by fair; at many sector fairs entry is easy for pre-registered trade visitors. We confirm the current registration rules of the fair you choose and complete it together.

Will the interpreter know our sector's technical terms?

We choose the interpreter according to your sector and prepare your glossary and documents together before the fair, so technical meetings at the stand run smoothly.

Can I attend more than one fair on the same trip?

Yes, if the dates allow. We plan intercity transfers by high-speed rail and domestic flights and balance the programme so it is not exhausting.

Are there fairs around Chinese New Year?

Because factories close before and after the Spring Festival, the number of fairs drops noticeably. We usually suggest using this period for preparation and appointment planning.
