Factory tours in China: how to plan a results-driven business trip

Industrial clusters: which city to visit for which product
Production in China clusters in specific regions, and choosing the right city is half the trip. For example, Foshan stands out for furniture and ceramics, Shenzhen and Dongguan for electronics and plastic parts, Yiwu for small household goods, Ningbo and other Zhejiang cities for machinery and moulds, and the Shaoxing and Suzhou areas for textiles and fabrics. In a cluster, dozens of factories making the same product sit within a few kilometres, which lets you compare many manufacturers in a short time.
At Yeni İpekyolu, we identify the clusters for your product and book appointments with three to five pre-screened factories in each. In pre-screening we check company registration, export experience, production capacity and product fit. That way you meet factories that actually make your product, not intermediaries who waste your time in the field. For trips that cover several clusters, we build an efficient route using high-speed trains and domestic flights. For each factory we confirm the visit time and the person you will meet in advance.
What to look at in a factory: from the production line to the warehouse
A factory visit tells you much more than the products shown in the showroom. Whether the production line is actually running, the age of the machines, the number of workers, quality control points, the raw material store and the finished goods packing area are the basis of the assessment. You should also ask which other brands the factory produces for, its monthly capacity and lead times in peak season. Our interpreter asks these questions within a natural flow of conversation and notes your observations.
In Chinese business culture, the first visit is also the start of a relationship. The factory owner or manager will often invite you to lunch; these meals are an important part of building trust and guanxi. Bringing a small Turkish gift, handing over business cards with both hands, and clarifying decisions in writing afterwards rather than rushing them at the table leaves a good impression. Yeni İpekyolu gives you a short briefing on these cultural details in advance. Asking permission before taking photos during the visit is another small but important detail that builds trust.
Business trip logistics and the steps after the trip
Most factories are in industrial zones far from city centres and hard to reach by public transport. So in the programme we plan a private car and driver, a route designed for two to three factory visits a day, and hotels near the factories. Airport pick-up, phone line, WeChat Pay and Alipay setup are completed at the start of the trip. Since factories may be closed or very busy around Chinese New Year and October's Golden Week, we choose the dates together.
After each visit we prepare a short report with photos and score the factories against the same criteria. At the end of the trip we agree on the shortlist together and draw up a roadmap for sample requests, price negotiation, company checks and a trial order. After you return to Türkiye, our team stays on the ground in China and continues sample and production follow-up on your behalf. If needed, we plan a detailed factory audit for shortlisted factories and a pre-shipment quality inspection on the first order. The relationships built on the trip thus turn into a supply process managed with confidence.
Who is our factory tour programme for?
Importers who want to see their supplier in person
Seeing a supplier you have only worked with online and on WeChat before a large order is the most effective way to reduce risk.
Brands planning custom (OEM) production
If you will produce under your own brand, you need to discuss moulds, materials and quality processes with engineers at the factory. We run these meetings with a technical interpreter.
Entrepreneurs assessing investment or partnership
For those who want to see production costs, technology levels and potential partners on site before entering a sector, we plan a short discovery trip.

Frequently asked questions
How many factories can I visit in a day?
Depending on the distance between factories, two to three visits are usually realistic. More than that is tiring and leaves less time to examine each factory properly.
Do factories accept visitors?
When an appointment is made in advance in Chinese for a serious buyer, most factories gladly accept visits. We arrange appointments directly with decision-makers via WeChat.
How do we tell a trading company from a factory?
Before the visit we check the company registration and business scope; on site, the production line, machines and warehouse show the real picture. If needed, we plan a more detailed factory audit.
When should I avoid travelling?
In the weeks before and after Chinese New Year, factories close or run at low capacity. Golden Week at the start of October is also a busy travel period; we plan the dates together.
Should I negotiate prices at the factory?
On the first visit it helps to understand the price range and terms, but final negotiation is healthier after samples and a written quotation. We are with you in the negotiation stage too.
Do you help with the visa and invitation letter?
Yes. We help obtain an invitation letter from the Chinese company you will visit, with the document checklist and application preparation. We confirm the current visa rules together before you apply.
Do you follow up after the trip?
Yes. After you return, our team continues samples, quotations and production follow-up in China on your behalf and reports regularly.
