01 · Overview

Simultaneous or consecutive? The right interpreting mode for Turkish–Chinese events

01

The type of event determines the interpreting mode

In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter listens to the speaker in a soundproof booth and translates at the same time, while the audience follows through headsets. This is ideal for multi-speaker conferences, panel sessions and forums where time is limited, as the programme does not run longer. In consecutive interpreting, the speaker talks for a few sentences and pauses while the interpreter renders that section. Consecutive suits opening speeches, signing ceremonies, official receptions and meetings between delegations, as the tone of the speech and the protocol atmosphere are preserved. At Yeni İpekyolu we review your programme and recommend the best mode for each session.

Many events combine both modes. At a Turkish–Chinese business forum, for example, morning sessions may run with simultaneous interpreting, afternoon B2B meetings with table-side consecutive, and the formal evening dinner again with consecutive. For small groups, whispered interpreting (chuchotage) or portable tour-guide systems are options without setting up a booth; especially for delegations touring a factory or technology park, the interpreter speaks into a microphone and delegation members listen on light receivers. This flexibility helps you use your budget and programme efficiently.

02

Booths, headsets and a two-person interpreter team

Simultaneous interpreting demands intense concentration, so in international practice there are usually two interpreters in the booth for each language direction, taking turns at set intervals. Since the number of simultaneous interpreters working directly between Turkish and Chinese is limited, it is important to reserve the team as soon as your event date is set. If the programme also has English-speaking speakers, relay interpreting via English can be planned for some sessions. At Yeni İpekyolu we clarify the interpreter team, language combinations and rotation plan in advance.

On the equipment side, you need booths, interpreter consoles, audience receivers and headsets. For events in China we coordinate equipment with local technical companies, and for events in Türkiye with suppliers in Istanbul. Connection to the venue's sound system, microphone discipline and the arrangements for handing out and collecting headsets are details that must run smoothly on the day. We add a rehearsal slot to the programme and make sure the technical team and interpreters test everything before the first session.

03

Preparation materials and protocol: the unseen side of successful interpreting

An interpreter's performance depends directly on the preparation materials they receive. Speech texts, presentations, the speaker list, names of institutions and titles, and sector terms should be shared before the event. Chinese titles and institution names have established equivalents; if the title of a deputy mayor or the president of a chamber of commerce is not rendered correctly, it can cause discomfort from a protocol point of view. After collecting the materials, we prepare a bilingual list of terms and names for the interpreting team.

At official events with Chinese institutions, protocol rules such as speaking order, seating, the arrangement of the signing table and gift presentation are important. When you work with our delegation organisation service, we coordinate these details in Chinese with the Chinese side's protocol team. At signing ceremonies, the position of the consecutive interpreter, the length of speeches and press statements are also planned in advance. That way everyone knows their role on the day and interpreting flows without interruption.

06 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why does simultaneous interpreting need two interpreters?

Simultaneous interpreting requires very intense concentration, and quality cannot be maintained by one person for long. Two interpreters taking turns keep the same quality throughout the day. This is a standard part of international conference practice.

Is a booth required for a small meeting?

No. For meetings of a few people, consecutive or whispered interpreting is sufficient. For medium-sized groups, a portable tour-guide system offers an experience close to simultaneous without setting up a booth.

Direct Turkish–Chinese interpreters, or via English?

Whenever possible we prefer direct Turkish–Chinese interpreters, as there is less loss of meaning. If the programme involves several languages or the event is very long, relay via English can be planned for some sessions. We explain the advantages of each option clearly.

When should I send the preparation materials?

The earlier the better; ideally a few days before the event. Last-minute presentations are accepted too, but quality rises noticeably when the name and term list arrives in advance.

Our event is in Türkiye; do you also serve Chinese guests?

Yes. Our Istanbul office coordinates the interpreter team and equipment for events in Türkiye. Welcoming Chinese guests and accompanying them throughout the programme can also be arranged.

Can I get a recording or transcript of the interpreting?

Recording and broadcasting need to be agreed in advance with the interpreters and speakers. Once consent is given, a recording can be arranged and bilingual session summaries can be prepared.

Our delegation will tour several cities in China; can the same team accompany us?

Yes. The lead interpreter can travel with the delegation, and for large events our local team members in each city join to support. This keeps names, terms and protocol knowledge consistent throughout the programme.
