For almost everyone who decides to buy from China, the first stop is Alibaba. Then someone mentions 1688: “Prices are much lower there.” Someone else says: “Don’t use platforms, go straight to the factory.” So which is actually right? Should you buy on Alibaba, on 1688, or directly from the factory? The answer depends on your product, order volume, quality expectations and how much time you can dedicate to the process. In this article we compare the three channels against the same criteria: who the seller is, price and MOQ structure, payment protection, language of communication, quality control options and logistics. We also show, with practical scenarios, how you can combine these channels and when each one stands out. At the end you will also find a short checklist to help you choose the right channel for your situation, plus answers to frequently asked questions.

What is Alibaba and who is buying on Alibaba right for?

Alibaba.com is an international B2B marketplace that Chinese manufacturers and trading companies use to reach overseas buyers. The interface works in many languages, primarily English, sellers are export-oriented and used to foreign buyers’ needs such as export packaging, documentation and international payments. That makes it the most accessible starting point for businesses buying from China for the first time without a team on the ground.

The platform’s strengths are its huge product range, the verification information shown on supplier profiles, and the buyer protection mechanisms offered for orders placed through the platform. Since the scope and conditions of protection may change with platform policy, read the current terms before ordering. Its weakness is that there are hundreds of similar listings for the same product and factories and intermediaries are mixed together; prices also usually include an export margin.

What is 1688? Advantages and challenges of buying on 1688

1688.com is the same group’s wholesale platform for China’s domestic market. Sellers there mainly serve Chinese retailers, e-commerce sellers and other manufacturers. Prices often appear lower than on export-focused platforms, and for some products you can buy in small quantities. This makes it attractive for importers, especially e-commerce sellers, who want to test many products in small batches.

However, 1688 is not designed for foreign buyers. The interface and seller communication are in Chinese, payments are usually made through domestic Chinese payment systems, and sellers mostly do not provide export documents, export packaging or international shipping. Goods are first sent to a warehouse inside China, consolidated and checked there, and then shipped abroad. In practice, buying on 1688 therefore requires a reliable purchasing agent or team in China.

When assessing the price advantage you need to look at total cost. Once domestic Chinese courier, warehousing and consolidation, agent commission, quality control and export handling are added, the gap may narrow. In addition, 1688 sellers make products to Chinese domestic standards; you need to separately check labelling, documents or technical compliance required for sale in Turkey. Set up correctly, however, 1688 is a powerful tool for importers who want to expand their range quickly.

Buying direct from the factory: the most control, the most responsibility

Buying directly from the factory is usually the most efficient model for product customisation, production under your own brand (OEM/ODM) and regular, high-volume orders. With the intermediary layer removed, you have more room in price negotiation, speak directly to the technical team and can be involved in decisions on moulds, materials and processes. Over time this relationship turns into a competitive advantage your rivals cannot easily match.

On the other hand, working directly with a factory means you must provide, through your own processes, the protection that platform guarantees offer: company verification, a factory audit, a bilingual contract, a payment schedule and pre-shipment inspection. Many factories, especially large ones, require high MOQs and give less flexibility to small buyers. It is also worth remembering that some factories do not appear on any platform and are found through fairs and visits to industrial clusters.

Alibaba vs 1688 vs factory: what each criterion tells you

On price, the general tendency is that 1688 and direct factory buying appear more favourable than Alibaba listings, but this is not conclusive without a total cost calculation. On MOQ, 1688 stands out for small quantities and factories for large volumes, with Alibaba offering a wide range in between. On payment protection, on-platform orders add an extra layer of protection, while in direct factory buying protection is built through the contract and inspection.

On communication and control the picture reverses: on Alibaba English communication is easy but the person you speak to may have weak ties to production; on 1688 communication is entirely in Chinese; at the factory you build the deepest communication with the technical team, especially if you have a Chinese-speaking representative. If your goal is customisation and brand development, the factory is usually the logical start; for rapid product testing, 1688; and for a first experience with standard products, Alibaba.

  • Alibaba: first purchase, standard products, English communication, platform protection
  • 1688: small quantities, wide variety, domestic prices, needs an agent
  • Factory: customisation, OEM/ODM, high volume, direct technical contact

Which channel for which scenario? Practical examples

Say you want to test thirty different home and kitchen products for your online store. In that case, buying in small batches on 1688, consolidating the products in a warehouse in China and reaching out to the manufacturers of the winners as sales data comes in can be an efficient route. Once the winning product is clear, talking directly to the factory that makes it opens the door to branded packaging and a better price.

On the other hand, for a furniture collection of your own design or a machine part with a technical specification, buying direct from the factory is almost unavoidable. For such products, factory visits in industrial areas such as Foshan or Ningbo, sample development and production follow-up determine the outcome. If you are buying a standard product in medium volume for the first time, starting with a few verified sellers on Alibaba and then deepening the relationship off-platform is a balanced approach.

Whatever channel you choose: samples, verification and inspection are essential

The channel debate sometimes overshadows the real issue: whoever you buy from, it is your own processes that manage quality and delivery risk. A highly rated seller on Alibaba, a 1688 store with thousands of sales and a well-known factory in the industry can all misunderstand your specification or subcontract work in a busy period. That is why sample approval, a written specification and pre-shipment inspection must remain the basic rule in every channel.

In 1688 purchases in particular, opening and checking products from several sellers one by one at the warehouse in China allows missing or faulty items to be returned while still in China. Returns and exchanges after the goods reach Turkey are much harder in terms of both time and cost. In direct factory purchases, adding an in-process inspection during production minimises surprises on large orders.

Combining channels and a checklist for choosing the right one

Experienced importers see these three channels not as alternatives but as complements. They use Alibaba for market research and price references, 1688 to see domestic prices and product variety, and the factory for long-term core supply. Over time it also becomes possible to learn which factory a platform seller actually works with and move the relationship there.

At Yeni İpekyolu we support our clients across all three channels: we verify Alibaba sellers, run 1688 purchases in Chinese with inspection and consolidation at the warehouse, and manage direct factory negotiations on site and in Chinese. Share your product and goals with us and let us define the right channel mix for you together.

  • Is the product standard or customised?
  • Is the order volume small, or regular and large?
  • Do you have a Chinese-speaking representative in China?
  • Who will do quality control, and where?
  • Has total cost (freight, commission, inspection) been calculated?

Frequently asked questions

Can I order directly from 1688 to Turkey?

Since most sellers do not ship abroad and expect domestic Chinese payment, buyers usually work through a purchasing agent or a warehouse in China. Goods are consolidated and checked there and then shipped to Turkey.

Is the Alibaba seller really a factory?

A “manufacturer” label on the profile is not enough on its own. We recommend verifying via the business scope on the licence, the factory address and a live video tour.

Is paying off-platform risky?

Paying off-platform means stepping outside the platform’s protection. You should therefore build your own protection through company verification, an account in the company’s name, a bilingual contract and a payment schedule tied to inspection.

Can a small business work directly with a factory?

Yes. Medium-sized factories in particular are open to small but regular buyers. Sharing your growth plan and asking for flexibility on the first order opens that door.

Should I also use Global Sources or Made-in-China?

Yes. These platforms are also useful for reaching export-oriented sellers and offer different supplier pools in some sectors. Not relying on a single platform strengthens your ability to compare.

Can I negotiate prices on Alibaba?

Yes, listed prices are often a starting point. Sharing a clear specification, target quantity and long-term order plan helps you secure better terms on both price and MOQ.
